Izanami and Izanagi(Ok so I’m just going to summarize because I’m linking two videos that explain their story waaay better than I can)
Origin: Japanese Mythology
History:
Created by the first deities, Izanami and Izanagi were divine beings. They were given the task of creating the first land mass. Izanagi was given a bejeweled spear that he churned the spear into the sea below a red bridge that connected the Heaven and Earth. From the salty drops of water came to be Onogoroshima, a mythical Japanese island.
Soon after, they wanted to get married. Because of love and/or the fact there really wasn’t anyone else. They built a “Pillar of Heaven”. When they met after circling the pillar, Izanami cried out “What a handsome man!” Which Izanagi thought was rude for her to talk first. (Damn dude, she called you handsome not ugly, chill)
So they had two kids, both male deities, and both came out deformed. Confused that they weren’t producing well, they sought the advice of the Gods who told them it was because Izanami, the woman, spoke first at their meeting. (Sexist much?)
They repeated the meeting, this time with Izanagi speaking first and they had the oyashima, the Eight Great Islands of Japan.
Izanami kept giving birth to more deities and islands until one day she gave birth to Kagu-Tsuchi, a fire deity, who burnt her genitals and caused her death.
Izanagi was so devastated that he went down into the Underworld to seek her out. When he found her, she said it was too late for her because she had eaten the food there, but told him to wait her and not follow her while she asked to be let out of the Underworld. (RInging any Greek myth bells anyone?)
He promised to wait but grew impatient. He lit a torch and ventured forward to find her. What he saw was his once beautiful bride, a corpse now covered in maggots and rotting flesh. In shock he fled, being pursued by Izanami and shikome.
Once out, Izanami cried out for everyday he refused to be with her, she would kill a 1,000 living beings. In response, Izanagi said he will give life to 1,500.
