Today’s kanji is a favorite of mine.
Today’s Kanji of the Day is…
Meaning: gods
Kunyomi: かみ (kami)
Onyomi: シン、ジン (shin, jin)
The English term “gods” really doesn’t do this kanji justice. It doesn’t mean “gods” in the Western sense of the word. This kanji refers to the kami, the deities/spirits of the animistic Japanese religion of Shinto. Kami are not exactly gods or deities. They live in the trees, in shrines, in the ocean, in the clouds, really almost anywhere. Even people can become kami. While this kanji has also come to refer to gods such as the Judeo-Christian God, or the gods of the Ancient Greeks, it carries a connotation much more complicated than that.
